Here are some Basses for the student to harmonize. Notes not marked are, as usual, Roots of Chords; notes marked x are Thirds of Chords, requiring a First Inversion; notes marked * are Fifths of Chords, requiring a Second Inversion. See that every Dominant Chord has a Major Third (the Leading Note of the Scale). |

In the following Basses let the student pick out his own First and Second Inversions. Look out for the Leading Note. These will require study. |

When a Bass note is found which can not be the Root of a Chord, it must be either a Third or a Fifth; but, more often than not, it is a Third, indicating a First Inversion. By this time the student knows where to look for a Second Inversion. |
